When it comes to public speaking, you will want to do everything you can to learn how to do it correctly. You will need to make sure that you take the necessary time to learn how to properly approach public speaking. Public speaking is like a lot of things in life, it’s learned. You will find that once you overcome any fear that you may have about public speaking, you’ll feel a lot better about yourself and your work. The first step is being open to learn.

Public Speaking Skill – Tip #2 – Allow the Fear to Be Your Friend

There are many people who will feel that nervous butterfly in their stomach every time they have to get up and give a speech. This is totally normal and it is only natural for a person to be slightly nervous. The key is to use this nervousness as a means to prepare yourself for your speech. If you know that you will be nervous, convince yourself that it is a good thing, that it can be used to help you focus. You should never allow the nervousness to stop you from seeing yourself as a success.

Public Speaking Skill – Tip #3 – Know Your Venue

One important aspect of successful public speaking is that you need to know the room or venue in which you will speak. You will want to get there early and familiarize yourself with your surroundings. There is nothing worst than getting to a venue late and having to step right up to the podium to deliver a speech. When you get there early, be sure to find some focus points that you can refer to when giving the speech. This will allow you to calm down when you feel that nervous feeling creeping up into your throat.

Public Speaking Skill – Tip #4 – Know Your Audience

Secondly, you will want to know your audience. You will want to know what type of people you are speaking to so that you can adjust the speech for their understanding. For kids you won’t want to use words they just don’t understand, and you will want to make things sound more exciting and complicated for adults.

Public Speaking Skill – Tip #5 – Know Your Material

As you step up to deliver your speech, it will become immediately apparent, whether or not you know your material. You will find that your nervous feelings will disappear quickly, when you really know what you are talking about. Be prepared! Spend time rehearsing your speech, preferably in front of a mirror or someone else. Pour over your notes, just prior to delivering your speech, to ensure that you remember all of your “talking points”.

These five public speaking tips can help you become the public speaker that you have always wanted to become. If you are open to learning and you allow your nervousness to help prepare you, while knowing your venue, audience and material, you’ll soon be on your way!

Fashion Fiesta Wrapped In A Week

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Creative sensational from different parts of the world taking style, beauty and definition of fashion to its edge, promotional linchpin of a multibillion-dollar industry, I am talking about nothing else but Fashion Weeks. Fashion weeks are hallmarks of fashion industry to rollout the new season feel in fashion. They generally last up to a week allowing fashion designers, artists and fashion houses to display their latest collection. It hallmarks next seasons in things, that’s why it is very important for buyers, media, celebrities and entertainment industry who take that fashion among the general public.

The most famous fashion weeks are held at Fashion Mecca Paris, Milan, London and New York. Since the new millennium fashion weeks are held in different parts of the world to put the local fashion on the world map and making a packed fashion calendar throughout the year. A refreshing sense of national identity and pride has emerged from the achievements of fashion sector – something that was otherwise traditionally been restricted to feats of sporting prowess, adding that its benefits go well beyond the fashion world (Emling 2006).

Fashion weeks are held several months in advance giving chance to designers, media and buyers to preview the trend for the next season. Fashion weeks are bi-annual events; the fashion weeks conducted between January and March are called “fall fashion weeks” whereas the one conducted in September through November are called “Spring Fashion Weeks”. Some fashion weeks can be genre-specific, such as a Miami Fashion Week (Swimwear), Prêt-a-Porter (ready-to-wear) Fashion Week, Couture (one-of-a-kind designer original) Fashion Week, Palm Springs Fashion Week (Resort Collections) and Bridal Fashion Week.

History

Omission of fashion week history would be curious at this point of time. Let me throw some light on that. Edna Woodman Chase–former editor of Vogue organized “Fashion Fete,” in 1914 to benefit the war-relief effort which is often apocryphally called the first fashion show ever. By the 1920s, the fashion show had gone mainstream. Early shows were often more theatrical than those of today.

Everything About Gourmet Cooking Revealed

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

People often think that gourmet cooking consists of a series of elaborate dishes of the kind that can only be found in top restaurants. It is thought of as a kind of cooking that is difficult to do and just as difficult to eat.

Gourmet cooking is felt to be something best avoided by the majority of people because it is too expensive and surrounded by social snobbery. Gourmet cooking is for the rich and those who have more money than sense.

That image of gourmet cooking dates back to the nineteenth century when French chefs dominated the industry. The best restaurants and the richest households employed French chefs.

Those chefs were trained in a rigorous system that aimed to keep professional secrets within a tightly knit group. The chef’s livelihood depended on maintaining his craft exclusivity. Equally his employer’s status depended on the exclusivity of the chef.

Today cooking is much more democratic. Few young chefs today would tolerate the kind of ritual humiliation that apprentice chefs suffered in old fashioned kitchens. Television chefs have demonstrated their skills before a wide public and college courses offer intensive training in arts once the preserve of elite kitchens.

As more people dine out on a regular basis the snobbery once associated with restaurants has become a thing of the past. The restaurant that allows its waiters to be rude to the customers will soon go out of business.

The food that is considered to be gourmet food has also changed. In the past the idea of gourmet food was to get as far as way as possible from peasant food. Today the same peasant dishes are likely to be on the menu of top restaurants. Simplicity and natural taste is everything. The rich sauces and elaborate dishes of old style gourmet food have been swept away.

A simple bruschetta made of a slice of bread covered in tomato sauce and toasted could be considered gourmet food. Yet a few centuries ago the same food would have been eaten by poor people.

The key thing in gourmet food today is the quality of the ingredients and the integrity of the final dish. If the bread is made with unbleached flour without any of the additives usually found in commercially made bread, allowed to rise slowly and baked in a wood fired oven then you are off to a good start. The sauce should, of course, be freshly made not out of a far. It should be made from tomatoes with the best flavour not the tasteless varieties that are usually found on the supermarket shelves. It should be well seasoned with garlic and fresh herbs.

A dish prepared in that way will be something out of ordinary. It will justifiably rate as gourmet food although it is, in itself, very simple and demands no special skills to make it.

End Your Fear of Public Speaking Today

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Fear of Public Speaking has been rated as the #1 fear in America and has been rated in the top ten fears in “The Book of Lists”. It’s even topped death in some surveys. It manifests itself in many situations, and for people from all walks of life. Fear of public speaking is only one of a group of anxiety related illnesses known as social phobia but it is probably the one that affects most people.

Fear of public speaking can effect your career development, since it’s almost impossible to be successful in business without have speaking to a large group at some point. Public speaking phobia is all too common in professional and social arenas and tackling your nerves may seem like a difficult task.

Anxiety

You can overcome the fear of public speaking, provided you develop a plan based on three basic ideas. Accept the fact that you have a fear of public speaking; make up your mind to work with it rather than to fight it; and learn proper presentation techniques. A good public speaking training course should address not only the basics concerns over nerves and anxiety, but will examine the reasons behind the fear, and help you with your individual needs. Remember that it is normal to experience some degree of anxiety when engaging in public speaking and that a certain amount of arousal actually facilitates performance. It’s perfectly normal to be nervous and feel afraid or anxious when speaking in public.

Skills

Increase your confidence and develop stage presence skills by taking courses in speech communication, drama, and theater. Consider joining a local chapter of Toastmasters. Toastmasters International groups hold meetings where people develop and practice speech and communication skills. Members give speeches in various lengths and topics and other members give constructive criticism. The clubs are built around acceptance, and the members have various skill levels. The other benefit besides conquering your phobia of public speaking is that these clubs hone leadership skills as well.

Practice

The three most important words to remember is practice, practice, and practice. Public speaking is a learned skill, developed much like other skills, such as playing the piano or painting: over time, with practice and some guidance. Practicing in front of your friends will help you get comfortable speaking to a group of people. Here a few more practice tips.

  1. Practice speaking at the correct volume for the crowd and room size.
  2. Practice the ending just as much as you do the beginning.
  3. Practice with any visuals you intend to use.
  4. Practice your speech in front of a full length mirror.
  5. Practice giving your speech to a group of stuffed animals. Don’t laugh it works!

The more you practice your speech, the more easily the words will flow, and the less you will have to rely on your notes.

Confidence

Develop a confident and relaxed state of mind when preparing to speak. Your audience should only see the relaxed, confident, professional you. If you give your body the signal that you are a confident public speaker by taking the stance of a confident presenter, your emotions and mind will follow. As the host introduces you, the audience will see how confident you are before you even before open your mouth. Tell yourself, “I am going to speak loudly and confidently.” Concentrate on projecting your voice and coming across as confident and cool.

Remember these tips the next time you have to speak before an audience and your fear of public speaking will lessen each time you repeat the process. Don’t let the fear of public speaking stop your career path, develop the public speaking skills, practice, and become a confident public speaker today.

How to Tackle Gourmet Cooking at Home

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Many restaurants charge a lot for what they call “gourmet food”, but often these dishes are just ordinary food prepared with extreme attention to detail. In fact, the secrets to gourmet cooking are proper garnishing and proper flavor proportion.

As opposed to fast food, gourmet cooking is done with stricter attention to and concern for sanitation, taste, excellence, and presentation. One very common trick performed by gourmet chefs is to tickle the taste buds with a lot of fats, seasonings and spices. For example, when you cook at home you use typical cooking oil sold in supermarkets. However, restaurant gourmet chefs cook with a full-fat method, using olive oil or butter instead of margarine or cooking oil. They also choose fatty meat cuts and use milk instead of cream. All these methods better bring out the flavors of an elaborate meal. In fact, most gourmet steaks are cooked drenched in loads of butter.

When you shop for ingredients for home style gourmet cooking, don’t forget to buy spices and seasonings of high quality. This is a time-tested way to jazz up your home cooked meals and make them taste more like the ones for which you wait half an hour in posh restaurants.

Of course, before you select your spices you must shop for the raw materials – the main ingredients. Make sure you only buy ingredients which are fresh and organic. Yes, this includes even the flavorings; these should be organic too. For example, say that you’re aiming to cook some authentic Italian food tonight. You can fake gourmet cooking by purchasing fresh pasta instead of dried pasta. And if you and your family love pasta and you’re feeling really adventurous, you can your own make homemade noodles with a high-grade pasta machine.

Growing your own spices and herbs will also help. Put your large garden to use by planting spices such as chili, onions, and garlic. The fresher and more organic they are, the better they will taste when mixed with your main course. Further, you can save lots of time and money with this method because organically grown spices are generally very expensive. Even though less expensive powdered versions are available, these kinds of shortcuts are considered crimes against gourmet cooking.

If you’re itching to prepare a gourmet dish, just spend a little more time in the kitchen with those fresh ingredients and a trusty DIY gourmet cookbook.

How to Buy a Used Tractor and Save Thousands of Dollars

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

The secret to getting a great deal when buying a used tractor is to be armed with information. Start by knowing how to quickly determine the age, condition and average selling price for any brand and model of used tractor. Then know what problem areas to take a close look at. The final step is to know the seven negotiating statements that will drastically lower the asking price of any tractor — including the one sound that you can utter that will knock 10% off the price of any tractor.

Let’s start at the beginning. The first step to getting a great deal on a used tractor is to do a little research and be an informed buyer. Let’s start at the beginning. When you’re looking to buy a used tractor don’t worry that it may be older than you are. Buying a used tractor is not like buying a used car. Tractors are made to last forever and you can still get parts for almost any tractor regardless of how old it is. Also, unlike your car, tractors are relatively easy to fix. Keep these facts in mind when you’re looking for a used tractor.

When buying a used tractor, one of the most important things to look for is a hydraulic system or three-point hitch as it is commonly called. The power-take-off or PTO is part of this system. Ford introduced the three-point hitch on their 9N tractor back in 1939. Farmall and John Deere waited a little later before they came out with a three-point hitch, but still most tractors you look at will have the three-point hitch, but be sure to check.

The three-point hitch and PTO system is very important because without it you will be limited in what you can do with your tractor.  So my advice is to only look at tractors with a three-point hitch. The next step is to determine the age of the tractor you’re considering. The best way to determine the age is to find the serial number and look it up on the Internet. Cars change designs every year, but tractors only make changes every decade or two, so you can’t tell much about how old a tractor is by just looking at it.

The Internet has a wealth of information about tractors. A good website where you can use the serial number and find the date a tractor was manufactured is Yesterday’s Tractors at YesterdaysTractors.com.  When you get to this site, click on “Tractor Registry” in the left Nav. panel to find information on any tractor. You can also use this site to see how much a particular type tractor has sold for recently.

The condition of a used is more important than the age. To determine the condition of a used tractor check to see if it has a tachometer that includes an hour meter. A lot of older tractors won’t have an hour meter. You can tell a lot about the condition of a used tractor by how much the petals are worn, how much play is in the steering and checking to see if there are any oil leaks. All of these factors will help you estimate the condition of a tractor.

Don’t be fooled by a new paint job. It could be covering up things. Also look at the tires. Just because the tires have good tread, it doesn’t mean that they’re in good condition. Check for dry rot and cracks. A good set of tires could cost you from $500 to well over $1,000.

Of course, check to see how the tractor starts and how it runs. If someone is trying to sell a tractor and they can’t make it start easily, there could be problem. You may want to have a mechanic look at the tractor with you. If the tractor is hard to start in warm weather, it will be even harder to start in colder weather. After you start the tractor, check to see if there is excessive smoke from the exhaust.

After you have checked all of the above points, you will probably know more about the tractor than the owner knows.

The next step is to check prices:

Two good places to check prices (other than Yesterday’s Tractors) are TractorHouse dot com and eBay. On eBay be sure to check completed auctions to see what tractors like the one you’re looking for really sold for. You can use this information in your negotiating.

One final point: How much equipment (if any) comes with a used tractor can be a big factor in determining the value of the tractor. Also, factor in how you will get the tractor home. If you can get a trailer in the deal, that’s that’s always a big plus.

When you’re armed with all of the above information, your final step is to “Negotiate like a Pro.” Here’s how to do it.

Seven negotiating techniques for people who don’t like to negotiate:

1.    Offer way less than you expect to have to pay.  Some people say, “I don’t want to negotiate and play games with you. I will give you $5,000 for the tractor and that’s it.”  These people almost always end up negotiating and paying a lot more.

2.    Always gasp and act shocked and surprised at the other side’s first price. Without saying a word, this lets the owner know that you think their price is totally unreasonable.

3.    Never, ever say yes to the first price they quote you –  even if the price is less than you expected to have to pay. If you say yes too quickly the other side will know that they priced the tractor too low. Then they may say something like, “Well let me clear this with my partner.”  Then he will come back and say that his partner would not agree with the offer.

4.    “You’ve got to do better than that.”  Always use this expression sometime during the negotiations.  This will almost always get you a lower price.

5.    Use the “good cop/bad cop” technique.  For example, say, “I would love to buy your tractor at that price, but my wife would kill me.  She’s dead set on me not paying more than $3,500 for a used tractor.”

6.    Arm yourself with information.  The more you’re prepared with facts and information, the better deal you can negotiate.  For example, say, “I have checked eBay and other Internet sources, and tractors like this one never sell for more than $35,000.”

7.    Never agree to split the difference.  The other side is almost always willing to split the difference, so offer less than half of the difference. You’ll usually get it.

Use these techniques and you will come out with the best deal possible on a used tractor. Don’t forget that there are a lot of good used tractors out there, so always be willing to walk away from any negotiation.

Sharing the Road with Tractor Trailers

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

For the automobile driver and his passengers, a collision with a truck, especially a tractor trailer, can have serious and sometimes fatal consequences. After the fact, it may not make much difference to the injured or dead which driver caused the accident. Moreover, automobile drivers cannot always avoid an accident with a tractor trailer because they have no control over the actions of either the truck driver or his employer the trucking company. Truck driver fatigue, driver substance abuse, poor truck maintenance, inadequate driver and safety training, as well as tight delivery schedules may play a role in tractor trailer accidents. What’s a driver to do?

Fortunately, an automobile driver can employ a number of defensive driving measures which will reduce the risk of colliding with a tractor trailer. First, it is imperative that automobile drivers recognize and respect the operational limitations of tractor trailers. Tractor trailers do not have the same ability to maneuver in traffic that automobiles do. Always keep this in mind as you drive with trucks nearby. For example, where a car traveling 55 MPH can come to a stop within about 265 feet, it will take a large truck 313 feet to stop.

This limitation leads to an important safety rule. Always keep your vehicle a safe distance behind or in front of a tractor trailer. Should you need to stop suddenly, you want the truck behind you to have sufficient space in which to stop without striking your vehicle’s rear end. Likewise, you want to be able to stop your own vehicle if the truck in front of you slows down suddenly. Never follow a truck closely or let one follow you closely.

A corollary to this rule involves situations where the automobile driver passes a truck and then abruptly cuts back into the truck’s travel lane without leaving sufficient distance between truck and car. Such an unexpected move can force the truck driver to slam on his brakes endangering not just the vehicle cutting in front but others close by. Make sure you have safely passed a truck, leaving plenty of distance between the two of you, before you attempt to move back into the truck’s travel lane. Likewise, don’t pass a tractor trailer quickly and then cut directly in front of it with the intention of exiting the highway. This behavior causes accidents.

You may have heard about “blind spots” or “no-zones”. You don’t want your vehicle traveling in a “blind spot” for more than a few seconds. Most vehicles, even cars, have blind spots. These are spaces you cannot see in your rear or side view mirrors. These “no-zones” around the left rear, right front, and the back of a tractor trailer are large. When your car moves into a “blind spot” while it passes a truck, the truck driver can’t see you or your car. The most immediate danger is that the truck driver will pull left or right into your travel lane without seeing you, causing a collision.

What can you do to reduce the risk of such a collision? Do not travel alongside a tractor trailer for longer than it takes you to move past the truck at a reasonable speed. This sounds simple enough, but it is not unusual for many of us to find ourselves cruising down a major highway beside a truck, sometimes for several miles at a time. The road ahead is clear, the weather is good, and we think nothing of it.

Make it a habit, as you approach a tractor trailer, to either pass the truck immediately or drop back in your lane behind the truck to a point where the truck driver can see your vehicle easily in his side view mirror. Likewise, before you begin passing a truck, make sure it doesn’t have its left turn signal activated and that it doesn’t appear to be moving, even slightly, towards your lane of travel. These are indications the truck driver is contemplating an imminent lane change. You can’t just assume the driver knows you’re there or that he will wait for you to complete your pass before he moves into your lane. Maybe he will, but maybe he won’t!

Sometimes, stopping your vehicle on the highway or on the shoulder is unavoidable. Remember, however, that there are few things more dangerous to all passengers and vehicles on the road than another vehicle stalled in a travel lane. If there is any way you can drive your vehicle entirely off the highway and also off the shoulder, do so.

Think ahead. If your vehicle seems to be developing mechanical problems or your gas gauge is near “empty”, don’t wait to take action to resolve these difficulties. Many a fatality has occurred when a tractor trailer driver fails to recognize soon enough that the vehicle ahead in his travel lane is at a dead stop. The trucker can’t come to a halt in time and ploughs into the rear of the stalled vehicle. Ordinarily, the automobile’s occupants don’t stand a chance under these circumstances.

It is best for you and your passengers to get out of harm’s way entirely if you can exit your broken down vehicle safely. After you activate your hazard lights, get as far off the highway as possible and as quickly as you can. Another auto or truck may crash into the rear of your car, and one or both vehicles could be knocked off the roadway in your direction. Keep in mind, however, that abandoning your vehicle on the road itself is extraordinarily dangerous for approaching vehicles.

On the other hand, it may be equally dangerous for you and your passengers to stay in your vehicle or try to push it off the road. Use good judgment under all the circumstances. One of the first things to do is contact the state and/or local police immediately to alert them to the road hazard. Law enforcement officers can warn approaching traffic of the hazard, reroute traffic safely around your broken down vehicle, and have it moved off the road promptly.

At night, vehicles stopped on the road or shoulder become even more dangerous. It can be almost as hazardous to stop on a highway shoulder after dark as it is to stop in a highway travel lane. No one sees well in the dark. Night vision can play strange tricks on what all of us perceive and think we see. Those tail lights far ahead of us may be nothing more than reflectors posted on either side of a driveway. On the other hand, the lights we see in the distance and assume belong to a vehicle in a moving travel lane may belong instead to a vehicle stalled on the road or shoulder. If the driver of a tractor trailer makes this error and follows what he perceives to be a moving lane of travel, he is likely to strike the stopped vehicle whether it is in a travel lane or on the shoulder. Truckers are especially prone to make this mistake at night when they are tired after a long day’s drive.

Such accidents are not uncommon, and unfortunately you read about them in the newspaper or see them reported on the television news. The most tragic examples involve cases where a “good Samaritan” stops in front of or behind the broken down automobile to render aid. The vehicle occupant(s) and the “good Samaritan” are checking under the hood of the car or are changing a tire when the tractor trailer slams into the rear of the vehicles. Don’t hang around a broken down vehicle at night. Leave its hazard lights in operation. If you can safely set out flares or triangles, do so, but, otherwise, leave the scene immediately and call for help. Stay in a safe place, out of the danger zone, until help arrives. State troopers and police officers are trained to handle these situations. You are not.

Watch out for the tractor trailer making a right turn. You don’t want to be the victim of what is commonly called a “right turn squeeze”. Tractor trailers cannot turn on a short radius. To make a sharp right turn at an intersection, they must “swing wide”. This means they often don’t approach the intersection entirely in what we think of as the “turning” lane. In making a right turn, the truck driver may move towards the left, either partially out of the right lane or completely out of it in the next lane over. This sometimes confuses the automobile operator approaching the same intersection. He may conclude, wrongly, that the truck is making a left turn or simply moving straight ahead.

In this situation, look first for the tractor trailer’s turn signals. Is the right turn signal activated? If so, you know the truck driver is preparing to turn right. Stay in your lane behind the truck. Don’t try to squeeze in to the right of the truck thinking you can get the jump on him when the light turns green. Don’t pull up to the intersection alongside the tractor trailer and assume its driver knows you’re there. You will have moved directly into his “blind spot”.

Just because your driver’s side window is directly opposite the truck’s passenger side window doesn’t mean the truck driver can look out his window and see you. Usually he can’t because he sits high up in the truck cab. If the truck driver doesn’t know you’re there, he is likely to cut you off as he makes his turn. Suddenly, you find yourself in the middle of a “squeeze play” between the truck on your left and the curb on your right.

Of course, you may have passed beyond the rear turn signals of a long tractor trailer when the trucker first activates his signal. As a result, in the end, you can’t rely simply on whether or not the truck’s right turn signal is blinking. You have to make a judgment call, and it is better to err on the side of caution. Before sliding into the space immediately to the right of a tractor trailer at an intersection, keep in mind that the truck may start turning right, directly into your path. When the red light turns green or as you approach the front end of a truck on your left side, watch the truck carefully for signs it is beginning to move into your lane of travel. If it does, take quick action to avoid it.

There is always the potential for a collision when either your vehicle or a tractor trailer is merging into traffic. If you merge into traffic improperly, from the shoulder of a highway, for example, you may cause a nearby tractor trailer to brake or turn suddenly. This may, in turn, cause a collision. Whenever you see a truck ahead of you merging into traffic, slow down and let the truck merge in front of you. Trucks simply don’t have the ability to accelerate as quickly as automobiles do.

The most potentially dangerous place on the road to find yourself is between two tractor trailers – both within a few hundred feet in front of and behind your vehicle. Just imagine what will happen to you and your car if the truck ahead slows down or stops suddenly without warning, and the truck behind you has to do the same when you begin to slow down or stop for the truck ahead. It is not a pretty picture. Remember, you can’t see around a tractor trailer to know what is going on in front of it which means you are unlikely to have any warning of the impending slow down of the truck ahead of you.

It goes without saying that unsafe speed contributes to tractor trailer accidents. Never approach a tractor trailer too fast from the rear. Also keep in mind that it is easy to misjudge a truck’s speed, especially as it approaches you.

There are many ways motorists, primarily automobile operators, can share the roads and highways more safely with nearby trucks and tractor trailers. This is not to suggest that truck drivers do not engage in unsafe behavior themselves. They do. However, whenever there is a collision between an automobile and tractor trailer, the automobile operator and his passengers are much more likely to die in the crash than the truck driver. Statistics tell us that 86 percent of those persons killed in accidents involving large trucks were not occupants of the truck. They were, for the most part, occupants of passenger vehicles. As a result, it is the automobile driver who has the most to lose in any collision with a large truck. Consequently, it is up to the automobile driver to keep the odds in his favor by driving defensively whenever he sees tractor trailers and large trucks close by.

Fish Tank Environments – 3 Very Different Habitats to Choose

Saturday, January 7th, 2012

You might think that the only decision that you have to make when deciding to start an aquarium is whether you want a freshwater tank or a salt water tank (or  marine tank). But in reality, there are several different environments within each of these two habitats. In this article, we’ll investigate natural habitats found in the community tank, as well as those found in the waters of the Amazon River basin. These environments can be recreated in your tank, and make for very interesting and entertaining aquariums.

For example, you can have a freshwater community tank. The desired result is to bring together a collection of fish and plants that can thrive in the same tank, but do not necessarily share the same origins in the wild. Species from all over the world can be mixed. This is the most common type of aquarium tank, especially for the new fish keeper.

Another “variety” of freshwater fish tank could be one stocked with fish and plants often found in streams that run through the deep rain forests of the Amazon. Floating plants and driftwood often make these waters acidic and murky, however the Amazon basin is home to some of the most spectacular fish species found anywhere in the world, including the prized discus fish.

Also found in the forests of the Amazon River are thousands of acid-water pools and streams, rich in humic acids that result from the decomposition of vegetation that falls from the dense forest plant life. The acids turn the water darkish brown, and much of the sunlight is blocked out by the overhead canopy. Oxygen levels are often very low in these pools and streams, however, many species of fish can be found here. Swimming happily together, you might see dwarf cichlid, brightly colored tetras, and bottom dwelling catfish. This type of fish tank setup is quite interesting, and it’s easy to create beautiful habitats.

Setting up a  fish tank can be a great family activity. But before you get started, here are five tips for fish tank success

1. Probably THE most important factor when you begin to explore your fish tank options is making sure that you decide what size aquarium you want. This is important because it will determine what type and how many fish you can keep. It’s best to plan ahead so you don’t limit your choices down the road. Try to get as big a fish tank as you can comfortably afford. In general, most people wish they had started with a bigger tank once they discover the fun and beauty of setting up and keeping their aquarium.

2. Another really important decision that you need to make is where you’ll buy your new fish tank and the supplies you’ll need to go with it. Be sure that you buy from a reputable and knowledgeable supplier, that way they’ll be around to answer any questions that you might have, and in the event that you need to return something you’ll be able to easily. They’ll also be there to supply you with any items you’ll need to keep your fish tank running smoothly.

3. Setting up and maintaining your tank doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. You can enjoy fish keeping very inexpensively. But to do this responsibly, you should educate yourself, and make sure that you set up your fish tank the right way from the beginning.

4. One of the easiest ways to get your tank up and running fairly quickly is to buy a fish tank kit. Kits come with everything you need, and range from a simple “bowl”, to larger tanks of just about any size. In most cases, they will be designated for use as either freshwater fish tanks, or saltwater (marine) fish tanks.

5. Many of the new kits and systems make marine reef tank keeping an option that you may not have considered before. The new salt water fish tank systems available allow you to bring the colors of the coral reef into your home or office, without the huge expense and headaches of just a few years ago.

Just like buying any pet, keep in mind that your fish tank will contain living creatures that need to receive the proper care and maintenance in order to live happy and healthy lives. Be responsible. Learn what will be involved before making an impulsive purchase. There’s so much information available (for free!)  to you that will help you to make an informed and responsible decision. Check out Top Fish Tank Aquariums for resources. We’re always here to help. How to Write Your Very First PHP Program

Sunday, December 4th, 2011

Advanced programmers know a secret. The secret that they know relates to how a PHP program is constructed.

Here is the secret:

“Complex programs are built up from simple programs. If you can learn how to create a simple program, you can learn how to build a complex program, no matter how complicated.”

A program can be constructed of only a few lines. They always start the same way. Start with the PHP start tag, followed by your programming code, and last by the PHP end tag.

Example 1:</p> <p>Line 1: <php line your program goes here></php>

The PHP program shown above has only 3 lines. Line 1 & 3 are the start and end tags, line 2 is your functional code. In this case however, line 2 is a comment and will not perform any specific action other than to remind you of something. Comments are not processed by the interpreter. Once a comment is encountered, it is basically ignored.

Example 2:</p> <p>Line 1: <php line this is one comment another the last></php>

The code in example 1 behaves exactly as the code in example 2. Even though example 2 has 2 more lines. If you noticed, the additional lines in example 2 are only comments. Once again they are ignored by the PHP interpreter (PHP Engine).

If there is one comment or multiple comments, the interpreter will act the same way. It will ignore any comments that it finds.

Example 3:</p> <p>Line 1: <php line below this is a real php programming command echo first program></php>

In example 3 you will see your first functioning PHP program. The ‘echo’ command was added to this program, located on line 3. An ‘echo’ statement is a built in PHP command that will output whatever follows it to the screen. Anytime you want to output something using PHP to the screen, web browser, or visual display. Use the simple ‘echo’ command.

As you can see, the words ‘My First Real Program’ follows the ‘echo’ command. It is very important to enclose the words that you want ‘echoed’ on the screen inside single or double quotes. This way the echo command knows from what character to start with, and

what character to end with, as it generates the output to the screen.

When the echo command is called, it takes the contents inside the quotes, and sends it out to the screen – minus the quotes. So the output would be:

My First Real Program

Example 4:</p> <p>Line 1: <php line the next is first echo command are second how to last in php></php>

The output to this program would be:

You are learning how to program in PHP.

When you start programming, there is no limit to how many comments and commands you can enter in your program. Go ahead, try it yourself. As you get better you won’t need so many comments to remind you of what you are doing in your program.

Complex programs are made up of simple programs. Learning how to mix simple commands together, along with PHP start and end tags makes a fully functioning PHP program. As you are learning, a good suggestion is to add as many comments as you need to help remember what you are doing. Comments are like taking notes that you can refer back to. As you get better at programming, you will naturally enter less comments. The PHP ‘echo’ command outputs characters to the screen. Enclose all characters after an ‘echo’ command with single or double quotes.

Congratulations, you just wrote your first PHP program.

Fish Disease in Tropical Freshwater Fish Tanks Aquariums – Fin and Tail Rot

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Symptoms

Fin and Tail Rot is a common infection in tank aquariums caused by a group of bacteria called Cytophaga, which affect fish with long, soft fins. The symptoms have a wide range. Generally the tail and fins start looking ragged, either in the form of a ‘bite’ or a ‘shredded’ effect. These lesions are discolored White/Grey with an edging of red. They can form into ulcers which have an orange/yellow color. The fish may also be listless and reluctant to feed. At an advanced stage, large milky patches can be seen on the fins and a sizable amount of tissue will have been destroyed. Respiration will also be rapid with excessive amounts of mucous in the gills and the lips of the fish may be swollen. The main danger is that if left untreated, the disease can rot the entire fin and start to invade the fish’s body.

Causes and Prevention

It is very important to diagnose why this infection has occurred. The bacteria actually exists in most fish tank aquariums without being a problem, therefore the disease is usually triggered by other factors, virtually all cases being precipitated by stress or poor environmental conditions. It is essential to identify and remove underlying stressors.

It is commonly introduced into tank aquariums by new fish from the pet store that harbour the harmful bacteria, which they release into your tank through feces. It is therefore vital to quarantine all new fish for about 10 days before introducing them into new fish tank aquariums. Fish can be extremely sensitive to stress and can also develop the disease due to the trauma of not being carefully acclimatized to a new fish tank environment. It is important that all fish are compatible and peaceful fish are not matched with aggressive fish, as this would lead to bullying which usually results in fin and tail nipping and the wounds provide ideal breeding grounds for the bacteria. Also do not overcrowd tank aquariums as this stresses out fish and can even make peaceful fish become nippy, as well as resulting in polluted tanks.

To identify and remove any problems with water condition, do a check of your water quality using a test kit to ensure there is no build up of unwanted chemicals. Make sure you maintain the proper water parameters particular to the fish species you keep. Hard water with a high pH encourages the growth of the bacteria, as does a sudden dip in temperature.

As part of your regular maintenance routine, ensure all equipment is working properly, especially the filter. Do 15% water changes weekly as well as vacuuming the gravel. You should also try to remove any uneaten food after each feeding time.

Treatment

Before using any medication, do a thorough clean of the fish tank. Scrub the inside of the glass/acrylic and thoroughly clean the gravel to remove waste from the substrate. Alternatively, you may completely remove the gravel for greater effect. You should minimize the areas where the bacteria can live and breed so take away any ornaments in the tank and bleach them. Clean the outside of the fish tank, hood, light and tank top. Water quality plays a critical role in the prevention and cure of fin and tail rot so you need to perform a large water change – I would suggest 50%. Remove activated carbon from filters as this will eliminate any medication you use.

There are different degrees of fin and tail rot which will determine the type of treatment you use in your tropical freshwater aquarium.

For the first stages of the disease, I strongly advise using Melafix along with aquarium salt. This is an all natural medication which will not destroy your biological filter. Use 2 teaspoons (10ml) of Melafix for every 50 gallons of water, combined with 2 tablespoons of aquarium salt per 10 gallons of water. Regular tropical fish will be fine with it. Dissolve the salt in water rather than pouring it into the tank, as if it comes into direct contact with fish it will burn them. The water will foam up and smell of liquorish but this is normal and will soon disappear after the treatment is over and you perform water changes. Perform a 5% water change each day for 10 days and replenish the medication and salt according to the correct ratio to bring the concentration back up to full strength. Continue to keep the tank clean by wiping the sides and vacuuming the gravel (if you keep it). This will treat the bacterial infection and help to heal the damaged fins. You should notice a rapid improvement and regeneration of fish fins. If not, the fish need to be removed to a quarantine tank for stronger treatment.

I would just mention that some advocate using copper sulfate but this risks further damage to the gills of the fish.

For more advanced forms of the disease I would recommend moving the infected fish into a spare, bare tank for treatment. You will need to treat the fish with antibiotics such as Tetracycline, Maracyn-Two or Maracyn Plus Antibacteria for at least 10 days. Carefully follow the instructions and do not mix medications as this can be fatal. These medications are available from pet shops and online vendors.

Keeping fish tanks, aquariums disease-free

Following a protocol of quarantining when adding new fish and carefully acclimatizing them to new tank aquariums, as well as suitably matching fish and avoiding overcrowding, will greatly minimize stress, which is a major cause of the disease. Through regular and thorough maintenance of fish tank aquariums, ensuring good water quality, correct water parameters and efficient filtration, incidence of parasites becoming a problem should be eliminated. Should fin and tail rot occur despite your best efforts, early signs of the disease can be easily detected by carefully monitoring your fish each day, especially at feeding time. Through swift remedial action, fish can be quickly treated and restored to health.

Fashion Industry: Ready To Face The Future

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

The fashion industry is very complicated. There are no standard fashion companies. They come from a wide spectrum of enterprises working in the apparel, footwear, home textiles and accessories markets.

The industry is made up of various kinds of companies like retailers, design source and selling companies, companies with their own manufacturing facilities and other companies who outsource production but retain control over parts of the production process.

Moreover, companies functioning in the high fashion segment often face a different kind of pressure as compared to those functioning with commodity fashion goods.

All of these aspects combine to make the fashion industry one of the most complicated industry. Yet, various issues can be noticeably recognized as common across the industry.

. Consumers have the power

. Supply chains are complicated

. Product launching and delivery takes time

. Companies must be able to manage a product mix

. Inventory control maintenance is important

. Impact of the latest technology on the fashion industry

. Copyright issues for fashion designs

Consumers have more power

Today’s buyers have more purchasing power then ever before and are less tolerant due to increased time pressure in today’s lifestyles.

They are more aware about environmental and human rights issues and have superior quality demands. They demand a huge variety and more frequent changes in the choices available to them. Moreover, they also expect immediate availability of perfect matching set of garments and accessories in their preferred color and size combinations in the same store.

In terms of satisfying the consumer’s needs, retailers are the first in line, but all companies in the supply chain are driven by the prerequisite to anticipate the expectations and requirements of their customers. From design to production and to the final sale, all members of the supply chain need to check that stores are stocked with the correct requirements when the consumer needs to buy!

The companies that are quick to respond to the consumer requirements are those that will remain profitable in an environment of rapid global competition and increasing material and operational costs.

Supply chains are complicated

The fashion industry is distinguished by global supply chains and complicated logistics. Labor and transportation costs often determine where production takes place and outsourcing of all or part of production is common. Companies throughout the industry have to deal with global sourcing problems and need to regularly evaluate their sourcing strategies.

Production work is often done across multiple places, which may be also located in different countries. Setting up of cutting, sewing, subcontracting and transportation, and the synchronization with raw material supply, is a very tedious process.

Product launching and delivery takes time

While working through the many pre production steps, including yarn or fabric selection, garment development, specification and sampling, the industry takes a long time to introduce a new product in the market.

Both, the complex nature of the supply chain and the global nature of production add to the industry’s long lead times. This arrangement of long time-to-market and long lead times does not correlate with the need to react immediately to changes in customers requirements.

The ever changing seasonal and trend driven nature of the industry depicts that the product life cycles are too short. Even for cyclic demands where the life cycle may continue further, there are often small changes to design, and color or size combinations may be changed. The logistics of managing the large number of styles and maintaining stock keeping units is a difficult practice.

Companies must manage a product mix

Besides long lead times, fashion producers are stressed to constantly design and develop new product lines to maintain retailers’ interest and increase consumer sales. Producers have noted that in order to maintain this speed, raised flexibility and quickness to satisfy changing customer demand, which is quicker than ever before, it is very challenging for them to judge or come out with such types of products. Gone are the days when a perfect fashion trend direction decided what consumers wore. At present, many styles are available, and with rising globalization, consumers can approach fashion news through latest media tools.

Fashion products change frequently, from hosiery and basic underwear through medium-priced high street brands, to exclusive high fashion brands. Managing brand awareness and brand loyalty is a serious task in retaining the position in the market. Margins in repetitive basic products are low, so neither a retailer nor a manufacturer can ever afford being out of stock.

Shifting to the high-end fashion sector, margins increase and sales volumes are lower, but consumers demand an ever changing range of choices, forcing the companies to produce multiple collections per year.

Many companies have to put in efforts to overcome the added challenge of arranging a mix of repetitive lines and collection-driven products, and a requirement to segment their product range and arrange the different segments in a suitable way. From design to demand planning, sourcing, production, distribution and sale, the demand of various product segments must be separately tackled if companies need to perform well.

Companies require clarity about the sector of the market they are targeting, and they have to direct their business in that way.

Inventory control management is important

Companies try to keep inventory levels at a minimum in all industries. In the fashion industry the requirement to maintain inventory levels under control is worst due to less product life cycle. In this industry, there is only one solution to sell the goods.

For collection-driven brands, the entire floor sets must be in the retail stores when these products are introduced, otherwise the chance to sell the goods is missed and obsolescence exposure is a high risk.

For the products that are frequently in demand, it is crucial that retailers and suppliers do not undergo stockouts. This part of the market does not possess the same level of brand loyalty, and customers may well be attracted to shift brands if the color and size they required is not immediately available in the stores when they need to buy.

For all companies, the balancing action of keeping inventory at the necessary level to fulfill demand, while ensuring that they are not left out with obsolete inventory, is a main problem.

Latest technological impact on fashion industry

Recently, the Burton Amp jacket, what is depicted as “the world’s first and only wearable electronic jacket with an integrated Apple iPod” was introduced.

According to some fashion experts the clothes will soon turn into accessories for your gadgets. Today new technologies are much involved with clothing and apparels that you can not judge whether you are wearing technology or whether technology is wearing you?

Besides, electronics will keep decreasing in size to such an extent where we would no longer considerably need the objects to hold them. Hence, today the fashion industry is experiencing new challenges: “intelligent textiles”, “smart clothes”, “i-wear” and “fashion engineering” and are only a few of the trends which will transform the entire fashion industry within the next decade.

Nowadays, many new materials and technologies are applied in textiles and accessories when they are still too costly or primitive for other applications. A wide variety of electronic devices can already be made into clothes and this will rise. New fabrics are already being developed to offer power generation – by using solar power, electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical means.

The combination of high-technology into textiles, e.g. modern communication or monitoring systems or the development of new materials with new applications, has just begun, but the branch has already moved in a gigantic expansion for this sector. Particular applications for the health and security sector, e.g. clothes with extern monitoring systems, already today exist in a large quantity.

Within the coming few years, we’ll see a lot more new applications in garments with latest technology. Hence, there are many designing challenges for fashion designers and engineers for making most demanding fashionable wears.

Copyright issues for fashion designs

Fashion apparel is a multi-billion dollar business that has no national boundaries due to its global existence. Designers, retailers and consumers decide their statements according to international fashion trends. In the last decade, consumer awareness of particular designers has also raised dramatically. Magazines and newspapers also cover the fashion industry as a part of their national news coverage, concentrating on the dynamic world of creative designer expressions.

The common man is very much aware about names and faces of fashion models and the designers for which they model. At present many television channels and feature films involve the fashion industry. Consumers can now identify the various types of designers and designs.

Today, many designers find inspiration from street fashion, celebrities, vintage styles and other designers’ work. Even though there are possibilities of duplication in products and designs due to easy accessibility of the latest printing and computer technology, and due to appearance of the regional or traditional designs in apparels worldwide, it can not be ignored easily. It is really a challenging task to cope with this issue globally.

Engine Lift Rentals Are A Cost-Saving Alternative

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Professional and amateur automobile repair technicians will have a need for an engine lift at some point during their work. This machine allows the motor to be removed from the automobile in a safe and controlled manner. They are rather costly pieces of equipment, so if they are only needed occasionally, a technician may wish to rent one rather than purchasing it.

These hoists are manufactured in different varieties that range in price from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. The more costly models use hydraulic technology and can handle the heaviest engines currently manufactured. While a commercial shop may have a need to buy such a machine, the technician who works on only the family cars will save a lot of money by renting it.

This hoist is available for rental from most heavy-duty equipment manufacturers. It can be rented for portions of or full days, weekly, or monthly. The cost is relatively reasonable, ranging from about $30 for a half-day to $250 per week for the most common models. The equipment can be folded up and transported in the flat bed of a truck to and from the rental location.

Go online and search the yellow pages to find a hoist rental store, then give them a call to find out the weight of the hoist in order to make sure it can be transported in an available car. If not, a truck or panel van may need to be borrowed or rented to pick up the item. The rental center may offer free drop off or pick up, so inquire about that as well.

The engine lift is an essential tool for replacement and rebuilding of automobile motors. This equipment will allow an auto technician to quickly and safely raise and lower the car engine, allowing other parts of the car to be repaired. Those with only an occasional need for this piece of equipment should consider renting it from a local equipment store…
